Kyushu University, Fukuoka City and JCCL Successfully Commercialize CO₂ Separation and Recovery Equipment
- 5.24.2024 | PRESS RELEASE NEWS
JCCL, Inc. (Head Office: Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City) a startup originating from Kyushu University, is pleased to announce the successful commercialization of its CO₂ separation and recovery equipment.
The newly commercialized products are:
• VSS1: A membrane performance evaluation device for CO₂ separation
• VPSA1: A CO₂ recovery device using solid absorbents
These devices are based on patented technologies developed by Dr. Yu Hoshino of Kyushu University’s Faculty of Engineering. They were completed through public support and joint research with institutions including Fukuoka City, representing a successful example of industry-academia-government collaboration. JCCL is committed to contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality through low-cost CO₂ separation and recovery technologies.
Introduction of Commercialized Products

① VSS1: Vacuum Steam Sweep-Type Membrane Performance Evaluation Device
This device evaluates the performance of CO₂ separation membranes by passing humidified CO₂-containing gas through the membrane, applying vacuum and steam on the permeate side.
Key Features:
• Custom control of humidity, pressure, and steam supply to evaluate membrane performance and identify optimal separation conditions
• Simulates various gases (e.g., flue gas, air) with adjustable temperature, humidity, and CO₂ concentration
• Measures and records gas volume, CO₂ concentration, temperature, humidity, and pressure on both feed and permeate sides
• Prevents condensation during humidification experiments and allows drainage without stopping the system
• Equipped with automatic calibration and control systems for long-term durability testing
Target Users & Applications:
• Companies, universities, and research institutions aiming to test CO₂ separation membranes, evaluate membrane performance, or optimize operating conditions
Advantages:
• Proven to concentrate 1% CO₂ to over 75%, and 13% CO₂ to over 97% for more than a month
• Supported by JST, JAXA, MEXT, and Fukuoka City; partnerships in place for mass production
• Uses amine-containing gel membranes that eliminate the need for drying, enabling low-cost separation

② VPSA1: Vacuum Steam Swing-Type CO₂ Capture System
This device absorbs CO₂ from humidified gas using a solid absorbent and desorbs it using controlled vacuum steam, recovering over 97% pure CO₂ at a rate of about 2 kg/day.
Key Features:
• Adjustable pressure and steam supply for experimental optimization of separation conditions
• Simulates various gas types (e.g., flue gas, indoor air) with customizable temperature and humidity
• Long-term recording of recovered gas volume and CO₂ concentration using flow meters and NDIR sensors
• Prevents condensation and allows continuous drainage during humidification experiments
• Automated calibration and control systems for extended durability testing
Target Users & Applications:
• Companies, universities, and research institutions conducting small-scale CO₂ recovery trials or cost analysis of absorbents
Advantages:
• Proven to concentrate 7% CO₂ to over 97% using JCCL’s amine-containing gel
• Developed with support from JST, JAXA, NEDO, and others; partnerships in place for scaling
• Enables direct CO₂ recovery from humid gases without dehumidification, reducing costs by up to 75% compared to conventional methods
• Currently undergoing scale-up and methanation process demonstrations with multiple partners under a Japan Ministry of Environment project
