World’s First Successful CO₂ Recovery from Home Water Heaters—Enabling Safe & Cost-Efficient CO₂ Capture from Distributed Emission Sources Across Schools, Municipalities, Businesses, and Households across Japan

JCCL Inc., (Headquarters: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture; CEO: Toshiyuki Umehara), is a company advancing the implementation of CO₂ separation and recovery technology, is pleased to announce its successful achievement of CO₂ recovery from home water heaters—a world-first (based on JCCL’s research).

To realize a carbon-neutral society, it is essential to develop processes that separate and recover CO₂ generated by fossil fuel combustion and convert it into useful materials. So far, many projects have focused on capturing CO₂ emissions from large-scale sources such as thermal power plants and steel mills.

However, no commercial devices had been available for capturing CO₂ from small combustion sources, such as heating and cooling systems or household water heaters. As a result, research has progressed on Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, which extracts CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. However, once CO₂ is released into the air, its concentration drops to 400 ppm, making recovery extremely costly.

In response, JCCL developed VPSA1 and VSS1 devices to capture CO₂ directly from small, dispersed emission sources. With support from Fukuoka City’s Startup Growth Support Subsidy Program, JCCL successfully demonstrated CO₂ recovery from a household gas-fired water heater’s exhaust (5.7% CO₂ concentration), achieving over 99% concentration using the VPSA1 unit.

With this technology, schools, municipalities, businesses, and households across Japan can safely and cost-effectively capture CO₂. Given its high purity, the recovered CO₂ can be repurposed into dry ice, city gas, and other applications.

Looking ahead, JCCL aims to further develop and implement this technology for small-scale CO₂ emitters, such as gas heat pumps, air conditioning systems, boilers, and vehicles, in collaboration with businesses seeking CO₂ recovery solutions.

Additionally, the development of the VSS1 unit was made possible with support from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Fukuoka City.

JCCL remains committed to advancing carbon neutrality, further reducing CO₂ recovery costs, scaling up its technology, and implementing CO₂ utilization solutions tailored to client needs.
