JCCL, Toyo Seikan Group Holdings and Mitsui & Co. Plastics Begin Joint Initiative Toward Early Social Implementation of CO₂ Separation and Recovery Technology

JCCL, Inc., (Head Office: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture; CEO: Toshiyuki Umehara), Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, Ltd., (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Takuji Nakamura), and Mitsui & Co. Plastics Ltd., (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Tatsumichi Sato) have agreed to launch a joint initiative aimed at accelerating the early social implementation of JCCL’s CO₂ separation and recovery technology in pursuit of a carbon-neutral society.

Overview and Background

As the world moves toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, CO₂ separation and recovery technologies are gaining attention. JCCL, a startup from Kyushu University, is uniquely positioned with two types of CO₂ separation and recovery technologies: one for post-combustion gases (e.g., heavy oil, city gas) and another for direct air capture (DAC). By combining these, JCCL can recover low-concentration atmospheric CO₂ at high purity (97–99%) more efficiently and at lower cost than conventional methods.

To promote early social implementation of this energy-saving CO₂ recovery technology, the three companies will collaborate by leveraging Toyo Seikan Group’s manufacturing expertise and Mitsui & Co. Plastics’ sales network.

About JCCL’s CO₂ Separation and Recovery Technology

Key Advantages:
● Utilization of waste heat:
JCCL’s amine-containing gel absorbs CO₂ efficiently and allows for easy desorption using low-temperature steam (40–60°C), enabling effective use of waste heat from factories.
● Reduced recovery costs:
Unlike conventional methods that require high energy for repeated absorption-regeneration cycles, JCCL’s process uses low-pressure steam at constant temperature, reducing energy consumption to about one-fourth.
● No risk of amine volatilization or leakage:
The polymer gel used as the absorbent eliminates the risk of amine volatilization or leakage, which is a concern with traditional liquid or solid absorbents.

Roles of Each Company

Company Role
JCCL CO₂ separation materials, improvement of CO₂ recovery equipment, expansion of the global patent network assuming equipment with large capacity.
Toyo Seikan Group Standardization and scaling up of CO₂ separation and recovery equipment using technology from packaging container production.
Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Plastics Marketing for global standardization of the recovery process using sales development expertise and networks.

Future Plans

Starting in FY2025, a demonstration test using a small-scale recovery unit (VPSA1) will be conducted at Toyo Kohan Co., Ltd.’s Kudamatsu Plant (a Toyo Seikan Group company). This will include durability testing, on-site optimization, and development for mass production.

Based on the results:
● FY2025: Social implementation of a small unit (30 kg/day CO₂ recovery)
● FY2026: Deployment of a container-type unit (300–500 kg/day CO₂ recovery)
● In parallel: Development of energy-saving DAC technology for demonstration within FY2025

Efforts are also underway with other partners to explore CO₂ utilization. The three companies will work together to implement energy-efficient CO₂ recovery and utilization models, contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society by 2050.

<About JCCL>
Founded in 2020 as a Kyushu University startup, JCCL develops CO₂ recovery technologies and systems. Its core technology, an amine-containing gel inspired by biological gas exchange systems, enables low-cost, high-performance CO₂ recovery without the need for drying processes. JCCL has participated in national projects and received multiple inquiries from major corporations.
